Soka Gakkai International observes November 28 as the anniversary of its 1991 expulsion from Nichiren Shōshū.
On November 28, 1991, the lay Buddhist organization Soka Gakkai was formally excommunicated by its parent sect Nichiren Shōshū in what members call the 'C Operation'. This schism marked a turning point in the group's history, leading to the establishment of Soka Gakkai International as an independent global movement. Followers commemorate the day to honor their 'spiritual independence' and to reaffirm their dedication to the teachings of Nichiren Daishonin. The anniversary is observed through study sessions, discussions on organizational philosophy, and events highlighting the group's worldwide unity. It serves as a solemn reminder of Soka Gakkai's journey toward self-determination and religious freedom.

Pacific Day commemorates Ferdinand Magellan’s 1520 entry into the Pacific Ocean via the strait now named after him.
Pacific Day marks the historic moment on November 28, 1520, when Portuguese navigator Ferdinand Magellan sailed through the strait that bears his name and entered the vast ocean he called 'El Mar Pacifico'. This milestone expanded European knowledge of global geography and paved the way for the first circumnavigation of the Earth. Magellan’s voyage demonstrated the world’s roundness and opened new maritime trade routes between East and West. Present-day observances may include lectures, museum exhibitions, and maritime celebrations honoring seafaring heritage. The day offers an opportunity to reflect on the spirit of exploration and the ocean’s crucial role in connecting cultures worldwide.
