The Arakawa Floodway, a major flood control channel in Japan, was completed on this day in 1924 and officially opened with a water conduction ceremony.
The Arakawa Floodway was created to reduce flood risks in the Tokyo metropolitan area by diverting excess water from the Arakawa River. Its construction involved major civil engineering work including excavation of a new channel east of central Tokyo. On October 12, 1924, authorities held a formal water conduction ceremony to mark the completion of the project. The floodway quickly proved its value by redirecting floodwaters during seasonal rains. It helped protect urban areas from severe flooding and supported regional development. The success of the floodway influenced later flood control initiatives in Japan. Today, the Arakawa Floodway remains a critical part of Tokyo's water management system.
