1946年10月11日、太平洋戦争からの引揚者や闇市商人たちが上野駅前に臨時の物資販売所を開設しました。 不足する食料や日用品を米軍の払い下げ品などで販売し、戦後混乱期の生活を支える場となりました。 これが現在の「アメヤ横丁」（アメ横）の起源とされ、多彩な屋台や商店街が形成されていきました。 1950年代以降、商店組合が整備され、安価な衣料品や食品、雑貨を求める人々で賑わう市場へと発展しました。 現在も観光名所として国内外から多くの人が訪れ、戦後日本の復興と食文化の歴史を感じさせる場所です。
