1846年にイギリスで生まれ、1879年に来日し神戸に定住。 鉄道や山岳リゾートの開発に着手し、六甲山牧場や観光道路を整備。 外国人向けのリゾート施設を創設し、日本の観光産業の基礎を築いた。 地域経済の活性化にも貢献し、多くの来訪者を惹きつけた。 1918年に神戸で逝去。
