(1602 - 1685)

イエズス会宣教師

イエズス会宣教師
Italian Jesuit missionary active in Japan during the early Edo period.
Born in 1602 in Macerata, Italy, Giuseppe Chiara joined the Society of Jesus at a young age. He traveled to Japan in the 1620s and ministered to hidden Christian communities under strict persecution. Chiara’s writings and letters provide valuable insights into the lives of Japanese Christians during the Tokugawa shogunate. Despite living under threat of arrest, he remained dedicated to his mission for over sixty years. He died in 1685 in Ōita, leaving behind a rare first-hand account of Christian endurance in isolation.
