Baltic German admiral and explorer who led Russia’s first circumnavigation.
Born in 1770 in Estonia, Krusenstern entered the Russian Imperial Navy and rose through the ranks.
He commanded the 1803–1806 expedition that completed Russia’s first global circumnavigation.
Krusenstern mapped Pacific islands, established trade contacts in Japan, and collected scientific observations.
His published accounts boosted Russian maritime ambitions and inspired future explorations.
Afterward, he held senior naval positions and oversaw hydrographic surveys in the Baltic Sea.
Krusenstern died in 1846, leaving a legacy as a pioneer of Russian naval exploration.
