1913年に福岡県で生まれる。 1932年にプロ入りし、独創的な打ち回しで注目を集める。 定石研究に熱心で、新布石理論の構築に貢献。 対局記録や棋譜解説書を執筆し、後進の普及に努めた。 アマチュアや研究会への指導も行い、囲碁界に影響を残す。 1976年に逝去。
