James Irwin was an American astronaut who flew on Apollo 15, later serving as an Air Force pilot and a Presbyterian pastor.
James Benson Irwin (1930–1991) was an American astronaut selected in NASA's third group of astronauts in 1966. He served as the lunar module pilot on Apollo 15 in 1971, becoming the eighth person to walk on the Moon. A former U.S. Air Force test pilot, Irwin flew numerous high-performance aircraft before joining NASA. After retiring, he founded a Christian ministry and became a Presbyterian pastor, sharing his experiences and faith through speaking engagements. Irwin was awarded the NASA Distinguished Service Medal for his contributions to the space program. His blend of exploration and spirituality left a unique legacy in both aerospace and religious communities.
