On August 7, 1721, the celebrated playwright Chikamatsu Monzaemon debuted Onna Goroshi Abura no Jigoku (The Woman-Killer and the Hell of Oil) at the Takemoto-za in Osaka. This Bunraku puppet drama explored themes of betrayal, passion, and moral conflict through vivid storytelling and innovative stagecraft. Its emotional depth and theatrical techniques elevated the art of jōruri and influenced generations of Japanese dramatists. The play's success cemented Chikamatsu's legacy as the Shakespeare of Japan. It remains a classic in puppet theater repertoires.
