Mary Todd Lincoln (1818–1882) was the First Lady of the United States and wife of President Abraham Lincoln.
Born in Kentucky in 1818, Mary Todd married Abraham Lincoln in 1842 and brought social grace and intellectual vigor to the White House. As First Lady during the Civil War, she supported her husband’s political leadership but faced criticism for her lavish tastes amid national strife. She advocated for wounded soldiers, visited hospitals, and contributed to war relief efforts. After her husband’s assassination in 1865, Mary endured profound grief and struggled with mental health challenges. She embarked on fundraising tours and sold personal memorabilia to secure her family’s future. Mary Todd Lincoln died in 1882, leaving a complex legacy as a highly educated and tragic figure in American history.
