Kondo Shuzo (1771–1829) was a Japanese explorer and cartographer known for mapping Hokkaido and the Kuril Islands.
Born in 1771 in Tsukigata village, Kondo Shuzo entered service under the Matsumae clan and soon became involved in Ezo (modern-day Hokkaido) exploration. He led expeditions to chart the coastline and islands north of Japan, including parts of the Kuril chain, during the late Edo period. His detailed surveys and maps provided valuable information for Japan’s understanding of its northern frontiers. Kondo's work contributed to improving navigation and defense strategies in the region. He documented local Ainu communities and natural resources in his field journals. Kondo’s pioneering efforts laid the groundwork for future scientific exploration of Hokkaido before his death in 1829.
