The Tsukiji Little Theatre opens in Tokyo, revolutionizing Japanese modern drama.
On June 13, 1924, theater pioneers Hijikata Yoshi and Osanai Kaoru opened the Tsukiji Little Theatre in Tokyo. Dedicated to ‘shingeki’ (new drama), it introduced Japanese audiences to modern plays by Western authors like Chekhov and Ibsen. The venue became a creative hub, nurturing actors, directors, and playwrights who challenged traditional kabuki and noh styles. Its innovative productions emphasized naturalistic acting, ensemble performance, and contemporary themes. The influence of Tsukiji Little Theatre can still be felt in Japanese theater today, as it laid the groundwork for experimental and realistic stagecraft.
