Alexei Leonov was a pioneering Soviet cosmonaut born in 1934. On March 18, 1965, aboard Voskhod 2, he performed the first-ever extravehicular activity, spending over 12 minutes outside the spacecraft. Leonov flew a second mission in 1975 as part of the Apollo–Soyuz Test Project, strengthening US–Soviet space cooperation. After retiring as a major general, he worked as a cosmonaut trainer and artist. Leonov’s achievements opened the door to human exploration of space. He passed away in 2019.
