Japanese kokugaku scholar renowned for his studies of classical literature and Shinto traditions.
Born in 1629, Mosui became one of the leading kokugaku scholars of the Edo period. He researched ancient Japanese texts such as the Kojiki and Man'yōshū, offering new interpretations of Shinto rituals. His work influenced later scholars and contributed to the development of Japanese philology. Mosui's commentaries emphasized original Japanese traditions over Chinese influence. He taught many disciples and published key treatises on classical poetry and Shinto practices. His scholarship laid the groundwork for the kokugaku revival in the 18th century.
