茶道を愛好し外交にも関与した。
1552年に堺で生まれ、裕福な商家に育つ。
織田信長に仕え、対明貿易や外交交渉を担った。
千利休と交流し、茶道の発展に寄与した。
豊臣秀吉の政権下でも堺の自治を守る役割を果たした。
堺の繁栄を支えた経済人として知られる。
1627年に没し、その活躍は堺商人文化の象徴となった。
