1861年にオーストリアで生まれ、哲学と精神科学の研究を行った。ゲーテ研究を基盤に精神科学（人智学）を確立し、1913年に人智学協会を設立した。教育分野ではヴァルドルフ教育の基礎を築き、農業や医療、建築など多岐にわたる分野に影響を与えた。著作を通じて人間の精神性と社会との関係性を探究し、20世紀思想に大きな足跡を残した。1925年3月30日に没した。
