Sapphire

Sapphire's name derives from Latin 'sapphirus' meaning blue, called 'blue gem' in Japanese. A variety of corundum like ruby, with Mohs hardness of 9, second only to diamond. One of the four precious gems alongside diamond, emerald, and ruby. In ancient Greece and Rome, it was considered a sacred stone symbolizing heaven, used in rings worn by clergy. Also called the 'stone of saints,' treasured as a gem representing wisdom and truth.

Kunzite

Kunzite is a relatively new gem discovered in California in 1902, named after gemologist George Frederick Kunz. Newly added to September in the December 2021 birthstone revision. A variety of spodumene mineral, characterized by beautiful lilac-pink to pale purple colors. Shows pleochroism with color changes from different angles and phosphorescence, hence called 'evening gem.' With Mohs hardness 6.5-7, it's relatively soft and requires careful handling.
