Alexandrite
Alexandrite was discovered in Russia's Ural Mountains in 1830 and named after Emperor Alexander II. A variety of chrysoberyl showing 'color change effect' - green in daylight, red under incandescent light. Called 'emerald by day, ruby by night' for this rare property. Mohs hardness 8.5. Extremely rare, specimens with pronounced color change more valuable than diamonds. Treasured in Russia as 'Imperial Stone.'
