Even into his 90s, he was guiding clients up steep, icy routes, admired for his endurance and expertise. His cautious but determined approach made him a respected mentor in the mountaineering community. He died in 2004 at age 103, leaving a legacy that continues to inspire mountain adventurers.

Russian general pilot and cosmonaut
Russian Air Force general and cosmonaut who flew multiple missions to the Salyut space stations.
Born in 1934, Gorbatko graduated from flight school and served as a pilot and Air Force officer. He was selected as a cosmonaut in 1963 and participated in three spaceflights, including Soyuz 7, Soyuz 24, and Soyuz 37. His missions contributed to early space station experiments aboard Salyut 1 and Salyut 5. Awarded the Hero of the Soviet Union twice, Gorbatko logged over 110 days in space. After retiring from active duty, he worked in the cosmonaut training program. He passed away in 2017, leaving a legacy as a pioneer of human spaceflight.
