Alexander Berry was born in Scotland in 1781 and trained as a surgeon before embarking on a career in commerce. In 1822, he emigrated to New South Wales and, alongside his partner Edward Wollstonecraft, acquired large land grants in the Illawarra region. Berry played a central role in establishing the settlement of Dapto and served as a magistrate and community leader. He oversaw expansive agricultural and pastoral operations, becoming one of the most influential entrepreneurs in colonial Australia.
