Francisco Pascasio Moreno, often called Perito Moreno, was born in 1852 near Buenos Aires and became a leading figure in the exploration of Patagonia. He led numerous expeditions that mapped vast, uncharted regions of southern Argentina and Chile. Moreno was instrumental in establishing Argentina’s national parks and donated large tracts of land to preserve the region’s natural beauty. As an academic, he founded the La Plata Museum and contributed to the fields of anthropology and geography. He died in 1919, remembered as a passionate advocate for both scientific discovery and environmental conservation.
