Augusta Victoria of Schleswig-Holstein was born in 1858 and became the German Empress and Queen of Prussia upon her marriage to Kaiser Wilhelm II in 1881. She supported artistic and cultural patronage but remained a private and reserved figure. After Germany’s defeat in World War I, she accompanied Wilhelm into exile in the Netherlands.
