Iranian religious figure who founded Bábism and served as a spiritual pioneer in 19th-century Persia.
Born as Siyyid ʻAlí Muḥammad Shírází in 1819, the Báb emerged in Shiraz, Persia, proclaiming a new religious revelation in 1844. His teachings challenged established clerical authority and called for spiritual and social renewal. Despite intense persecution, the Bábism movement spread rapidly through Persia, advocating for moral reform and unity. He authored numerous letters and scriptures that laid the theological groundwork for the later Bahá’í Faith. Executed in 1850, the Báb’s legacy endured through his followers’ dedication and the eventual rise of Bahá’u’lláh. His shrine in Shiraz remains a pilgrimage site and testament to his transformative influence.
