Swiss mountaineer
Swiss mountaineer renowned for reaching a record high altitude on Mount Everest alongside Tenzing Norgay in 1952.
Born in 1914 in Switzerland, Raymond Lambert developed a passion for alpine climbing in the Swiss Alps. In 1952, he joined the Swiss Everest expedition and, together with Sherpa Tenzing Norgay, reached the South Col at 8,595 meters, setting a world altitude record. Although they fell short of the summit, their achievement paved the way for the first successful ascent by Hillary and Norgay in 1953. Lambert’s meticulous route planning and high-altitude techniques influenced subsequent expeditions to the Himalayas. He later led and participated in climbs of other major peaks in the European Alps and Karakoram. Through articles and lectures, Lambert shared his experiences, inspiring generations of climbers until his death in 1997.
