Frederick August Otto Schwarz was born in Frankfurt in 1836 and emigrated to the United States at age 20. In 1862 he opened a small toy shop in Baltimore, emphasizing quality and novelty. He later moved to New York City and established FAO Schwarz, which became renowned for its exquisite European imports and innovative toy displays. Schwarz prioritized customer experience, introducing mechanical toys and interactive demonstrations that delighted children and adults alike. Under his leadership, the store grew into a cultural institution on Fifth Avenue. He retired in 1897, passing the business to his sons, and died in 1911. FAO Schwarz remains synonymous with luxury toys and festive holiday traditions.
