Vittorio Sella was an Italian mountaineer and photographer celebrated for his pioneering alpine expeditions and striking mountain imagery.
Born in 1859 in Biella, Italy, Sella joined his father’s textile business before pursuing mountaineering. He made first ascents in the Canadian Rockies, the Andes, and the Himalayas. An accomplished photographer, he captured high-altitude landscapes with innovative glass plate techniques. His photographs were published in journals and books, influencing both science and art communities. Sella’s expeditions contributed to geographic knowledge and the development of mountaineering. He was honored by academic societies for his combined achievements in exploration and photography until his death in 1943.
