Bartholomew Gosnold was an early English explorer whose voyages laid the groundwork for the Jamestown settlement.
Born in 1572, Gosnold led the 1602 expedition that named Cape Cod and Martha's Vineyard. He co-founded the London Company, sponsoring the first permanent English colony at Jamestown in 1607. A trained lawyer, he combined legal knowledge with maritime ambition to advance colonization efforts. His detailed maps and journals guided subsequent settlers. Although he died during the Jamestown voyage, his contributions significantly shaped England's early American ventures.
