Mahasi Sayadaw was a Burmese Theravāda Buddhist monk credited with popularizing the Mahasi tradition of Vipassanā meditation.
Born in 1904 in Burma (now Myanmar), he received his monastic ordination at age 19.
He studied extensively at Mandalay's monastic universities, earning the title Sayadaw (venerable teacher).
In 1942 he began teaching intensive meditation courses at Mahasi Sasana Yeiktha, attracting students from around the world.
His clear instructions and systematic approach made meditation accessible to lay practitioners.
Many of his Western students established centers in Europe and North America, spreading his teachings globally.
Mahasi Sayadaw passed away on August 14, 1982, leaving a lasting impact on modern mindfulness practices.
