On August 7, 1970, three inmates led by George Jackson attacked the Marin County courthouse in California. During the violent incident, Superior Court Judge Harold Haley was taken hostage in the courtroom. A shootout and chaotic rescue attempt ensued as police moved to regain control. Judge Haley tragically died from a shotgun blast during the confrontation. George Jackson and several others were also killed as the siege ended. The event exposed tensions over prison conditions and political radicalism of the era.
