Palio di Provenzano(Siena,Italy)

A traditional bareback horse race in Siena’s Piazza del Campo, held to honor the Madonna di Provenzano.
The Palio di Provenzano is one of Siena’s two annual horse races, held on July 2 in honor of the Madonna di Provenzano. Organized by the city’s contrade or districts, riders race bareback around the historic Piazza del Campo. The tradition dates back to the 17th century when the event was first established to give thanks for the Madonna’s protection. Spectators line the square wearing contrada colors, cheering fiercely for their champions. The race is preceded by a medieval pageant featuring period costumes, flag bearers, and drummers. Winning contrade celebrate with feasts, music, and fireworks throughout the night. The Palio embodies Siena’s deep-rooted community spirit, local rivalries, and centuries-old cultural heritage.
