Jim Baen was born in 1943 and began his editorial career at Ace Books before moving to Tor Books. He founded Baen Books in 1983, focusing on military and space opera science fiction writers. Baen pioneered electronic publishing and created the Baen’s Bar online forum to connect authors and readers. Under his leadership, Baen Books launched the careers of authors like David Weber and Lois McMaster Bujold. He was honored with multiple Hugo Awards as a publisher for his forward-thinking approach to digital formats. Baen’s innovations transformed the science fiction publishing industry and left a lasting legacy upon his death in 2006.
