Japanese philosopher who founded the Kyoto School and blended Zen Buddhism with Western philosophy.
Kitaro Nishida was born in 1870 in Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan. He studied philosophy in Germany and returned to teach at Kyoto University. In 1911, he published "An Inquiry into the Good," launching the Kyoto School. Nishida developed the concept of "absolute nothingness," integrating Eastern and Western thought. His work deeply influenced Japanese intellectual life throughout the 20th century. He continued writing and teaching until his death on June 7, 1945.
