Patrick Floyd Jarvis Garrett (1850–1908) was an American sheriff and lawman best known for tracking down and killing the notorious outlaw Billy the Kid. Serving as sheriff of Lincoln County, New Mexico, Garrett led posses that pursued numerous fugitives across the Wild West. His pursuit of Billy the Kid culminated in a shootout at Fort Sumner on July 14, 1881. Beyond law enforcement, Garrett authored books recounting his experiences and the history of Billy the Kid. He later held various public offices in Texas and New Mexico but struggled with financial instability. Garrett’s image as a frontier hero has endured in Western lore and popular culture.
