Dick Scobee was a United States Air Force pilot selected by NASA in 1978 as part of Astronaut Group 8. He first flew as pilot on STS-41-C in 1984 before being named commander of STS-51-L. On January 28, 1986, the Challenger mission ended in tragedy shortly after liftoff, and Scobee and his six crewmates were lost. He was known for his leadership, professionalism, and dedication to exploration. His memory remains honored by NASA and the spaceflight community.
