New Deal: President Franklin D. Roosevelt signs an act creating the Tennessee Valley Authority.
President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the act establishing the Tennessee Valley Authority on May 18, 1933.
The Tennessee Valley Authority was created to address flooding, electricity generation, and economic development in the Tennessee Valley region. Signed into law by Roosevelt, the TVA built dams and power plants to provide affordable electricity and control river navigation. Its ambitious infrastructure projects brought jobs and modernization to rural communities during the Great Depression. The authority pioneered integrated resource management and hydroelectric power distribution. It also played a critical role in advancing soil conservation and industrial growth. The TVA model became a template for regional planning and public power initiatives nationwide.
