Around 1920, it was devised by local bartenders as part of promotional activities for Crème de Cassis produced in the Dijon region of France. By adding cassis liqueur to a Martini base, a more approachable cocktail with distinctly French flavors was born. It gained popularity in Parisian cafés and bars and eventually spread throughout Europe.
