Zhu Xi (1130–1200) was a Chinese philosopher and a leading figure of Neo-Confucianism. He synthesized Confucian teachings with metaphysical ideas in his commentaries. His interpretations of the Four Books became the core of the imperial civil service exams. Zhu served in government posts and advocated moral and educational reforms. His philosophical system shaped intellectual life in China, Korea, and Japan for centuries. He emphasized self-cultivation, principle (li), and the investigation of things (gewu).
