Indian philosopher and educator
Nisargadatta Maharaj was an Indian spiritual teacher and philosopher of Advaita Vedanta, best known for his influential work 'I Am That.'
Born Maruti Shivrampant Kambli in 1897 in Bombay, India, he initially worked as a small shopkeeper before encountering his guru, Sri Siddharameshwar Maharaj. Following his initiation, he dedicated his life to teaching non-dualistic philosophy, hosting satsangs in his modest Mumbai apartment. His dialogues with seekers were transcribed and published in the spiritual classic 'I Am That' (1973), which presents profound insights into the nature of self and reality. Maharaj’s succinct and direct teachings, centered on the question 'Who am I?,' attracted students from around the world. Emphasizing direct experience over ritual, he became a guiding light for modern spiritual seekers. He passed away in 1981, leaving a legacy of wisdom that continues to inspire readers and practitioners globally.
