H. Adams Carter was an American mountaineer and editor known for his leadership in the American Alpine Journal and contributions to peak exploration.
Born in 1914, Harry Adams Carter Jr. served in World War II before dedicating his life to mountaineering and journalism. He climbed in the Himalayas, Alps, and Alaska, pioneering routes and sharing his experiences. From 1960 until his death, he edited the American Alpine Journal, a key publication for climbers worldwide. Carter wrote guidebooks and articles that educated new generations of alpinists. As an educator, he lectured on mountain safety and conservation. His combined passion for exploration and scholarship left an enduring mark on the global climbing community before his passing in 1995.
