Polish Air Transport Auxiliary pilot and World War II military officer who later became a respected architect.
Jadwiga Piłsudska, daughter of Polish leader Józef Piłsudski, trained as one of Poland's first female pilots before World War II. After the invasion of Poland, she evacuated to Britain and joined the Air Transport Auxiliary, ferrying Spitfires and Hurricanes to RAF bases. Post-war, Piłsudska studied architecture at Cambridge University and designed public and private buildings in London. She remained active in Polish expatriate communities and authored memoirs of her wartime experiences. Awarded medals by both Poland and Britain, she passed away in 2014, honored as a pioneer in aviation and architecture.
