Salty Dog

Category: Long Cocktail
Base Spirit: Vodka
Alcohol Content: 約12-15%
Glass Type: Old Fashioned Glass

Description

Salty Dog is a historic cocktail born in Britain in the 1940s and perfected to its current form in America in the 1960s. Contrary to its name meaning 'deck hand', it features a refreshing and approachable flavor where the simple combination of vodka and grapefruit juice is perfectly accented by a salt rim. It's a cocktail with unpretentious charm, suitable for those who are sociable yet natural, valuing harmony with others. The salt effect makes grapefruit's acidity more prominent, making it a versatile drink enjoyable both on hot summer days and during dry winter seasons.

Origin

Country of Origin: Britain → United States (1940年代(現代版は1960年代))

Born in Britain in the 1940s, named after slang meaning 'deck hand'. The original was 'Salty Dog Collins' from the late 19th century, gin-based with lime juice. In the 1960s, America changed it to vodka-based using grapefruit juice, and instead of adding salt directly, the salt rim style became established. While named after sailors working covered in sweat and salt, it actually became beloved worldwide as a refreshing and approachable cocktail.
