American astronaut, molecular biologist and NASA payload specialist

American astronaut molecular biologist and NASA payload specialist
American molecular biologist and NASA astronaut who flew as the first female Spacelab payload specialist.
Millie Hughes-Fulford was a pioneering American molecular biologist who made history as the first female payload specialist aboard NASA’s Space Shuttle. Selected in 1983, she flew on STS-40 in 1991, conducting vital biomedical experiments on the effects of microgravity on human cells. Her work provided key insights into bone loss, immune function, and cell biology in space. A graduate of Stanford University, Hughes-Fulford held leadership roles at the San Francisco VA Medical Center and contributed to cancer research on Earth. She authored over 100 scientific publications, bridging spaceflight and molecular science. Her career inspired countless women in STEM fields and advanced our understanding of human physiology beyond Earth.
