Saint Werburgh was born a princess of the Mercian royal family in the 7th century. She chose religious life over court intrigue and became a nun under the guidance of St. Chad. As abbess of Ely, she led a community known for piety and charity. Numerous miracles were attributed to her, including the legendary resurrection of a goose. She died in 699 and was later venerated as a patron saint of England, with her relics enshrined at Ely.

Saint Ansgar was born in Amiens in 801 and dedicated his life to missionary work. Appointed Archbishop of Hamburg-Bremen, he led early efforts to convert the pagan peoples of Denmark and Sweden. He established churches and monasteries, laying the groundwork for Christianity in Scandinavia. His pious character and perseverance earned him the title 'Apostle of the North'. He died in 865, and his feast day on February 3 celebrates his enduring influence in Northern European Christianity.

Master Sheng-yen was a prominent Taiwanese Chan Buddhist monk and scholar. He founded Dharma Drum Mountain, focusing on the fusion of meditation practice and academic research. He studied at Rinzai monasteries in Japan and earned advanced degrees in Buddhist studies. His teachings emphasized the integration of spiritual practice into everyday life. He wrote over 50 books on Chan Buddhism and meditation. Sheng-yen established numerous retreat centers and educational programs worldwide. His legacy continues through the international network of Dharma Drum Mountain practitioners.
