French mystic and philosopher
Simone Weil was a French philosopher, mystic, and political activist revered for her profound reflections on suffering and justice.
Born to a secular Jewish family in Paris, Weil studied philosophy at the École Normale Supérieure. In the 1930s, she engaged in labor activism, working incognito alongside factory workers. Weil's writings on affliction, labor, and spirituality influenced existential and religious thought. She volunteered for the Republican side in the Spanish Civil War before returning to France. During World War II, Weil endured extreme hardships, which deepened her mystical ideas. Her major works, including The Need for Roots and Waiting for God, blend rigorous analysis with spiritual insight. Weil died in 1943, and her posthumous reputation as a moral philosopher continues to grow.
