Jørgen Jørgensen was a Danish adventurer and explorer known for seizing control of Iceland and declaring himself its ruler.
Jørgen Jørgensen (1780–1841) led a life of daring exploits as a sailor, trader, and explorer. After escaping British custody, he traded in Tasmania and participated in whaling voyages. In 1809, he landed in Iceland, ousted the Danish governor, and briefly ruled the island as an independent state. His reign lasted only two months before British forces restored Danish control and arrested him. Jørgensen spent years imprisoned in England before returning to Denmark to continue his maritime career. His extraordinary tale of ambition and adventure has inspired writers and historians alike.
