Alfredo Ildefonso Schuster entered the Benedictine Order in 1900 and was ordained a priest in 1906. Pope Pius XI created him a cardinal in 1930, recognizing his theological scholarship and pastoral leadership. During his tenure, he guided the Church through the challenges of Fascist Italy and World War II. He promoted charitable initiatives and oversaw the reconstruction of churches damaged by wartime bombing. Schuster was beatified by Pope John Paul II in 1996 for his virtuous life and dedication to faith.
