Pioneering Scottish mountaineer celebrated for his Himalayan first ascents.
Born in 1940 in Glasgow, Dougal Haston became one of the leading British climbers of his generation. He was part of the team that made the first ascent of Annapurna II in 1960 and later led expeditions on the Eiger and K2. Known for his technical skill and adventurous spirit, Haston co-founded the Cairngorm Mountain Rescue Team. He wrote and lectured extensively on mountaineering, inspiring climbers worldwide. Haston died in an avalanche on January 17, 1977, while attempting a winter ascent in the Swiss Alps.
