Born in 1930, Carey launched W. P. Carey & Co. in the early 1970s, pioneering the triple-net lease model in commercial real estate. Under his vision, the firm grew into a leading global real estate investment trust (REIT), managing properties across multiple continents. A generous philanthropist, he endowed programs and chairs at institutions including Johns Hopkins University, whose business school bears his name.
