Born in 1885 in Viking, Alberta, Gordon Flowerdew joined the Canadian Light Horse Regiment at the outbreak of World War I. In March 1918, he led 'Flowerdew's Squadron' in a daring cavalry charge against German positions at Moreuil Wood, France, capturing enemy guns and halting the advance. Despite overwhelming odds and heavy casualties, his leadership turned the tide on the Western Front. He was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross, the highest military decoration for valour in the British Empire. Flowerdew's action is remembered as one of the last great cavalry charges in military history. He died of wounds received in the battle and is commemorated by memorials in Canada.
